Remapping a car changes the manufacturer’s default settings and software on the ECU, replacing it with new software which can be tweaked and customized to the owner’s specifications (within legal limitations).
When a vehicle is remapped, the old ECU software is overwritten when the customized software is plugged in to the car’s serial port (sometimes referred to as an OBD port). This simple functionality has made the process of tuning a vehicle considerably easier, and has created many jobs for tuning engineers and specialist ECU software developers.
Car manufacturers are known to program their models’ ECUs so that they are not performing at peak efficiency. This allows them to release a sportier model with a more efficient engine by simply reprogramming the ECU and making small design tweaks. Remapping your car means you can get the most out of your engine – improving performance, fuel efficiency and responsiveness.
Improved engine performance is another way of saying more speed and more power. The increase in horsepower you’ll get from remapping depends on what sort of engine you have. For example, you could get an increase of as much as 40-50bhp (brake horse power) for a turbo engine. It may be lower in other engines. Many remapping services also boast an increase in torque of up to 80nm (Newton metres).
Is remapping safe?
Remapping an engine is perfectly safe, although due to customizing the engines ecu we do not offer any warranty on any of our remaps , and we will only carry out work on certain models which must undergo a full engine/ injector/ turbo clean before hand, to provide the safest remap possible
